How about the death of Jesus Christ on the cross?
Of course God used miracles to bring glory to Himself, but if you honestly don’t see the purpose of suffering for the glory of God, then what of the crucifixion? Why did Jesus even have to die in the first place? Why not just pop off the cross and, poof! Show everyone you’re God! Why did God let Jesus suffer if glory could only come through healing?
Jesus did not come to the earth to prosper, he came here to die. Period.
But there is no …
But there is no resurrection without the suffering of the cross. God’s glory came through Jesus’ life after death, but that could not be accomplished, first, without DEATH.
That is all Piper is saying here — God gets glory through the good things, but sometimes it takes the bad, like death or illness, to get there. I cannot see how you can possibly believe that He is only glorified through healing and not through the faith that comes with belief.

AMEN! I agree with the Word of God. Jesus is enough now and for eternity. At the cross of Calvary and at the empty tomb or His resurrection, He gave all I ever could ask or want. You have added some clarity to the issue. It is not that a person may be blessed by God BUT what a person does with the blessing. The sin that leads to is when man puts the love of possession & monetary wealth ahead of loving God(#1) & loving others (#2). The story of the rich young ruler was the same situation. He loved his possession above loving his Savior. He was able to keep his wealth & lifestyle but sacrificed his eternal spiritual life in Heaven with the Father.

Even then, when a man or woman does place God & others before possession, there is another sin waiting to snare us – pride & arrogance. We can get addicted to the feeling of being praised and honor. NO matter the good we try to do, guarding our hearts from stumbling is a daily chore.
I agree about how to use our resources. Our Messiah is not coming back for bricks, mortar, shrines and so forth. He is coming back to gather His people. Our hearts can be His temple now.

In Hebrew, the Messiah’s name is Yeshua – The name the Jewish believers use. The name Jesus means – God with us. Christ (Savior)is a term/label begun by a Greek man in the early church. In Greek it is “christianos” to describe how the faithful would act like Christ. I use “follower of The Way”.

ate, you’re missing the point…Piper’s problem is not with prosperity, but with the prosperity GOSPEL, that God is good because he gives us what we ask for. Listen to his example of the dying daughter — God is most glorified when we have lost it all and still find a way to bless him. We shouldn’t be professing God as a spiritual genie.
The message of Desiring God Ministries is that “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him” — not in cars or houses, but in Him.

I thank God for his many, many blessings, I strive to use them for His purposes, and I pray that I may know and love Him enough so that when tragedy strikes – when the Lord takes away – I will say “Blessed be the Name of the Lord!”
